The Bridge of Lies...
The Romanian name of the bridge is "Podul Minciunilor" which is accurately translated as “The Bridge of Lies”, but most English language descriptions refer to it as "The Liars’ Bridge" ("Lügenbrücke" in German).
The Bridge of Lies
is the second cast-iron bridge built in Europe and the first and the
oldest cast-iron bridge in service on the entire territory of Romania.
Today
it is a source of pride for Sibiu, being regarded as one of the most
important symbols of the city. The cast-iron bridge was constructed in
1859 to replace a wooden
bridge - bearing the same name - which had stood there since 1771.
The
bridge is unique not only due to its age but also due to the legends
that surround it. It was said that the bridge was the perfect
place to make an honest vow because it would creak at the slightest lie
and would crumble at more serious lies.
Today the
bridge is a popular place for
young lovers who consider it the perfect spot to declare their feelings.
Brides and grooms regularly have their customary wedding photos taken
on the bridge.
A bit of advice: when you're on the bridge try to avoid telling lies, however small and harmless they might be! ;-)
